Certification Renewal Made Easy

Well okay, it hasn't been made easier, it has always been pretty simple; most make it harder than it needs to be…

Once certified, you have to maintain that certification every 2 years by submitting the renewal application, the renewal fee, and the verification of the appropriate number of continuing education hours (20 for AAC, 30 for ADPC/ADC or 40 for ACC). 90 days PRIOR to your certification expiration date you receive a renewal form from the NCCAP office. This renewal form is sent to the address we have on file (from 2 years prior when you renewed, or initially applied). If you do not get a renewal form, you can download a generic renewal form from the www.nccap.org site under downloadable forms, or you can contact the office and we will be glad to fax you another one. The fact that you didn't receive one, 90% of the time, is because NCCAP was not informed of a move. Your renewal is due ON or BEFORE your expiration date - once it is received by the NCCAP office, it is processed and then forwarded to a volunteer reviewer who has been trained to know:

1) that content of the certificates of attendance contain all the required components,
2) that the topics submitted are actually topics NCCAP would accept according to the Body of Knowledge categories,
3) that they have been taken within the 2 year time frame from your last renewal to this renewal, and
4) whether the dates and the number of CE hours agree.

The reviewer has 14 days in which to turn the files around and then sends it back to the NCCAP office where it is processed either for renewing or back to you for more information. Although NCCAP allows 8-12 weeks, we generally get them turned around in about 5 weeks.

Things that slow down the process (and yes these are actual instances):

· make sure you send a check with the renewal packet
· make sure you submit certificates to verify the CE's
· make sure you submit the certificates that you wrote on the CE's
· make sure the number of hours you write on the renewal application agrees with the number of CE hours written on the certificate
· make sure if the CE was taken via home study that it was either pre-approved or through a college/university
· make sure it was completed within the 2 year time frame

If it's a conference - simply write that on the renewal form and then send the CE's to verify the sessions attended. You DO NOT need to list each and every session. EXAMPLE:

Session title: NAAP Conference
Date: 4/2006
Number of hours: 15.5

With these few simple steps, your certification renewal will go smoothly.
