Thoughts from the
Secretaryby
Michael A. Bower, ACC
NCCAP Secretary
Several members of the
Activity Profession in Washington State
have approached me over the last year
with a concern. They are working in long
term care facilities, have taken the
Basic Education and Advanced Management
Courses, and are providing the same
services as our certified members. They
cannot become certified, however, because
their facilities focus on head-injured
patients, AIDS patients or other
populations which are not primarily over
the age of 50. NCCAP has been asked if
there is any way that a certification can
be developed for them. After talking with
activity trainers from other states, it
is clear that this concern is not
restricted to Washington!
During the Joint Board
Meeting of NCCAP and NAAP last April it
was decided that a joint Standards
Committee would review the
professions current standards and
make revisions, as needed. We will be
asking these questions: Do our
standards meet the needs of our certified
members? and Do our standards
reflect the quality of the certified
members? The concerns of people
working with specialty populations are
being referred to this committee. One
suggestion that has been made is that
specialty tracks be
developed. I am sure there are other
ideas out there! Please send comments
and/or suggestions to me (address: 1134
57th Place SE, Auburn, WA 98092 or
e-mail: Richard.Faunt@
worldnet.att.net)
and I will make sure they are taken to
the Standards Committee. NN
