NCCAP
By: John Collins, CTRS,
ACC NCCAP Treasurer
The
National Certification Council for Activity Professionals
is encouraging certified activity professionals to apply
to the Scholarship Committee for the Beverly Morris
Scholarship. This scholarship has been developed in
honor of the first certified activity professional in
New York. This scholarship will provide funds to cover
registration costs for a certified activity professional
to attend a conference/convention, seminar/workshop,
or a course that is related to the activity profession.
Those certified members who are interested in applying
for this scholarship should submit the following information
to the
NCCAP Scholarship Committee sixty (60) days before the
educational program will take place: name, level certified
at, mailing address, telephone, place of employment,
brochure for the educational program which includes
registration amount, and two letters of reference related
to your commitment to being a certified activity professional.
In addition, and the recipient will be asked to write
an article for the next issue of the
NCCAP News addressing how this educational program would
help you as a certified activity professional. Scholarships
will be awarded as funds are available.
Another
scholarship, the Madge Schweinsberg Scholarship is also
available. Two $500 scholarships are presented annually
by both NCCAP and NAAP. Madge Schweinberg was a pioneer
in the development of certification for the activity
professional, and the original Certification Chairperson
of NAAP.
With
over 6,000 certified activity professionals in the country,
it would be great to see many applicants apply for these
scholarships. Stand tall and be proud of what you do
for your residents.
Certified
and Proud of It!!
Do
you remember how you felt when you finally received
your official NCCAP Certification Certificate? How fast
did it take you to have it framed and placed in your
office? I remember a recent call from a student who
said, "I am now officially certified - I received
it in the mail today." I congratulated her and
encouraged her to continue to grow in the profession.
As a certified individual myself, I would like to challenge
each of you to encourage others to get certified. Remember,
we are stronger and have a louder voice when numbers
continue to rise. National standards have been set and
many individuals are working toward meeting those standards.
However, sometimes they may need a little support and
encouragement. Please offer that support to them and
think back
to who was your mentor. Certification is available at
three levels - Activity Assistant, Activity Director,
and Activity Consultant - encourage all of these professionals
to become certified. I think an Activity Department
which only employs certified professionals can be well
assured that they have highly trained individuals who
excel in this profession. I'm certified and proud of
it and I encourage my peers, students, professional
friends, and association members which I am affiliated
with to review the standards and set some plans to follow
a track and get certified. NN
