Thirty Clock Hours! by
Kathy Hughes
NCCAP Special Projects Trustee
Recently, while reviewing a
renewal from one of the NCCAP members,
the question was posed concerning
obtaining the 30 clock hours and how
difficult it is to accomplish this task.
Many of our members are finding it
difficult to attend or pay for the
continuing education required for
renewing certification. We would like to
encourage you to add to our ideas on how
to obtain those hours.
At least 20% of the clock
hours can be obtained through inservices
at your facility. The inservice must be
at least 1 hour long and fall within the
NCCAP Body of Knowledge. Documentation
for this inservice can be the certificate
printed off from our Web site (http://www.nccap
.org) and completely
filled in with the Instructors name and
credentials and signed by the Inservice
Coordinator. For AAC that would be 4
hours, for ADC that would be 6 hours and
for ACC that would be 8 hours.
You can now use
personal enrichment, which
means, if you took a crafts class at your
local craft store you could use up to 20%
for your renewal. You could complete the
NCCAP certificate on the Web site or have
the instructor sign a letter stating that
you completed the classes. You could use
piano lessons, computer lessons, art
classes, folk dancing lessons, obedience
classes for your pet, music history
classes, Toast-masters classes,
aroma therapy classes, programs from you
local library or any classes that you
take for your own personal use.
Writing articles for your
state newsletter, the NCCAP NEWS, NAAP
NEWS or for ACTIVE-Pro.Net (http://www.activepro.net)
can earn you up to 20% of your clock
hours. You earn 1 clock hour for every
article that is published in a state or
national newsletter or magazine. The
article must be at least 400 words and
fit within the NCCAP Body of Knowledge.
You would submit the article (include the
publication that it is in) for your
renewal. You can also write for
administrator magazines or other health
care publications that are interested in
activities in facilities.
There are many online
courses that one can take and NCCAP has
pre-approved two that you could use (http://www.cesltd.net).
There are some others that would be
beneficial as well as college courses now
online for you to take for your college
credit. We are currently working on
Advanced Technology courses
that you will be able to take in the
future. We have approved many Long
Term Care Network sessions that you
can also use for clock hours. NN
