Activity Professional Certifications

NCCAP standards are based on over three decades of experience educating, training and certifying over 150,000 individuals. Our standards are designed to ensure we meet Federal and State requirements applicable to the Activity Profession. Based on the social model of care, our certifications focus on activities and engagement that ensures the highest quality of life to older adults. NCCAP offers three core Activity Professional Certifications. Individuals with an NCCAP certification can also add a Specialization in a number of areas.

Activity Assistant Certified (AAC)

An Assistant Activity Director (AAC) is an individual who meets NCCAP standards to assist, with supervision, in carrying out an activity program in a skilled nursing facility, assisted living facility and Adult Day Center. There are six tracks an individual can follow to apply for to become Activity Director Certified (ADC). There are three tracks which an individual can follow on their path the AAC. Our system will guide you to the appropriate track once you begin the application process.

AAC Renewal Details

 AAC Renewal Timeframe

  • Renewal is required every two years.  It is the responsibility of the individual to know when their Certification must be renewed
  • Renewals received without appropriate form and/or amount of payment are considered late and incomplete.  
  • The month of renewal remains the same as the Initial Certification. The year increases by two, therefore the date of the renewal does not change the renewal date.  Late renewals do not affect the two year renewal period.
Continuing Education Required for Renewal
  • 30 hours of continuing education which qualify per Continuing Education standard for ADC
Documentation Required for Renewal
  • Completed renewal form
  • Proof of continuing education necessary documents
  • Documents and renewal fee must be submitted via this website prior to the expiration date on the renewal form or a late fee.

Activity Director Certified (ADC) & Provisional (ADCP)

ADC Description and Tracks

An Activity Director Certified (ADC) is an individual who meets all NCCAP standards to direct an activity staff and program. There are six tracks an individual can follow to apply for to become ADC.  An Activity Director Provisionally Certified (ADPC) is an individual who has met several NCCAP standards requirements of full ADC and can apply for a one time Provisional Certification while working to fulfill the remaining requirements of the full ADC. You can see the NCCAP Standards required of each Track below clicking on each one.  When you are ready to begin the application, our system will guide you to the appropriate track for you by asking a series of questions.

Activity Director Certified Provisional (ADCP)

  • The ADCP level can be applied for only one time
  • The ADCP must meet three of the five standards in Track 4 which are listed here:
    • ACADEMIC EDUCATION
      • Complete MEPAP Part 1 (C.C.1-11) and the 90-Hour Practicum - Basic
      • Complete MEPAP Part 2 (C.C.12-20) and 90-Hour Practicum - Advanced Management
      • Minimum 12 college semester credits, Cannot include #1 and #2
      • Must include an English
      • Must include 1 course from NCCAP Education Standards
    • WORK EXPERIENCE
      • 6,000 hours within past 5 years.
    • CONTINUING EDUCATION
      • 30 clock hours of within past 5 years of programs that cover content listed from the NCCAP Body of Knowledge
    • NATIONAL EXAM

ADCP SPECIAL NOTES
  • Certification is provisional for 6 years, and non-renewable
  • To maintain provisional certification it must be renewed every 2 years during the 6 year period

  • To apply for ADC by the end of the 6-year provisional period, individual must meet one of the following:
  1. Meet all 5 components ADC Track

  • Available for those who completed a state approved course between 1991-2001.
  • ACADEMIC EDUCATION
    • GED or greater
    • Verified completion of state approved Basic Activity Course between 1991 and 2001
      • To verify completion, applicant must submit
        1. Name and credentials of Instructor
        2. Instructor signed Certificate of Completion
        3. Date course completed with start date and end date
        4. State in which course was completed
  • WORK EXPERIENCE
    • 12,000 hours within past 10 years
  • CONTINUING EDUCATION
    • 30 clock hours of within past 5 years of programs that cover content listed from the NCCAP Body of Knowledge
    • 6 hours of the continuing education must address Activity Documentation such as MDS or Care planning
  • NATIONAL EXAM
    • Successful completion of the National Exam

ADC Track 6

  • Available for those who completed the entire MEPAP 1 and course (90 hr Basic Activity Course and 90 hour Advanced Management Course) after 2001
  • ACADEMIC EDUCATION
    • GED or greater
    • Completion of the Modular Education Program for Activity Professionals (MEPAP) course no earlier than 2002
      • To verify completion, applicant must submit
        1. Name and credentials of Instructor
        2. Instructor signed Certificate of Completion

    • 12,000 hours within past 10 years
