Attention students of the MEPAP classes, as you are aware, teaching national certification is a mandated topic in the MEPAP curriculum;
NCCAP has asked the pre-approved instructors to assist each of their course completors with completion of the NCCAP application in order to help you realize which track of certification you are eligible for once you complete your MEPAP courses.
As NCCAP pre-approved instructors they are enabling you to utilize their course, along with your experience, continuing education, college credits and continuing education hours to pursue your goals of becoming nationally certified (* those with 4 year degrees in recreation may also be encouarged to apply for your credential with the NCTRC in addition to NCCAP. Many course completers are eligible for the ADPC level or higher.
Make sure before you complete your course to ask for their assistance in achieveing this goal, and as always feel free to contact the NCCAP office for any additional questions that you may have.
NCCAP believes with efforts on everyone's part, that we could get over 1000 new certified members within a year!!! (that's only 10 students per instructor...VERY realistic!!!) Let's go NCCAP, take pride get OTHERS certified!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS to Debbie Hommel, ACC of New Jersey for being chosen as the instructor that assisted the most individuals with their applications for certification (indicated on the front of the applications. Congratulations also goes out to John Collins, ACC of Florida that came in second. A scholarship has been created in their names to assist an individual in completing their MEPAP requirements.

**The NCCAP annual mtg was held at the usual time of 5:30pm - 6:30pm - The mtg this year was a little different in that the reports in addition to being posted in the upcoming newsletter are also available on the NCCAP.org site for your review, in a pdf file in keeping with the NCCAP goes green mentality to save paper. Also those in attendance were asked to review the current NCCAP Body of Knowledge and determine if topics need to be added, deleted or changed to meet the current industry need. At that time the education committee also spent a few minutes discussing the above and developing a plan for the future focus of the standardized exam for NCCAP

NCCAP addresses H.R. 4248 with Congressman Phil English
2008/02/28
NCCAP received numerous calls, emails r/t to the proposed H.R.4248, and NCCAP has submitted a statement to legislatiors as follows;
The National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (http://www.nccap.org/) has been certifying individuals that work with primarily the elderly populations in assisted living facilities, skilled nursing facilities and retirement facilities etc for over 20 years. We too are recognized by CMS in the federal regulations under F249 as being a nationally credentialing body for activity professionals which enable a person to be considered qualified to lead activity programming in these types of facilities. NCCAP while not directly opposed to the intent of H.R.Bill 4248, are concerned with the exclusiveness of the terminology r/t who is qualified to lead the activity programs in especially the SNF facilities, as activities are reimbursable as long as the program is lead by the terms of F249, which as stated above includes NCCAP. If the bill is passed as stated, many administrators in the SNF's facilities could mistakenly believe that they must employ a recreation therapist to lead their programs which is not the case. If recreation is ordered by a physician, then it would indeed be conducted by a recreation therapist, much like if Physical Therapy was ordered by a physician it would be conducted by a physical therapist. Activity programs offered in geriatric facilities are therapeutic by nature in that they meet their meaningful quality of life in areas of mental, psychosocial, emotional, physical and spiritual well-being’s. NCCAP much like NCTRC has over 6,000 national credentialed individuals (while NCTRC may have a larger number of certified, a good portion of their certified work in mental health or child development, not with the geriatric population). Both organizations are recognized nationally as being considered "qualified to lead activity programs," an NCCAP certified activity program is reimbursed by the daily per patient per day (ppd)rate, and does not require an additional physician order, yet meets the resident’s meaningful quality of life. NCCAP would ask that you do NOT support the bill as worded, in that it is perceived exclusive in nature and could mistakenly be an assumed mandate that facilities discharge their qualified NCCAP certified activity professionals, only to replace them with a recreation therapist that probably has not been physician ordered.
***NCCAP Executive Director, Cindy Bradshaw and Nancy Best, NCCAP Special Interest Chair and PA State Representative met with Congressman English r/t the proposed HR 4248 Bill. NCCAP provided NCCAP history, MEPAP materials and necessary information for him to review with regard to the current wording of the proposed bill. NCCAP is scheduling a follow up mtg with his office.
Kim Grandall, ACC, NCCAP reviewer and Government Relations Committee member, has developed a slide presentation to explain the bill and a copy of this can be emailed to you upon request, and has been sent to the other NCCAP state reps for their use in supporting the NCCAP position.

NCCAP Board REVISES the ACC Track 3 - Mentors being sought...
2008/01/16
NCCAP has had ACC Track 3 open for over 11 years (1996) now with NO one ever completing the ACC track (PAMC course). NCCAP conducted a pilot program (2006 – 2007), to determine what criteria should be made available for ACC Track 3, or if ACC Track 3 should be discontinued etc. After the 16 month pilot program was completed (2005-2006) the NCCAP Board reviewed and discussed the results and decisions were made accordingly. It was determined that the 104 weeks of coursework, did not replace the actual “hands on” consulting hours required for the ACC Tracks, but rather that it was more of an equivalent to a guided study/independent college coursework working with a mentor, and that the person completing the course, still needed the actual experience of consulting. (among other results).
NCCAP will be opening up ACC Track 3, for a undesignated time frame for those that have ADC Track 2 (the Associates degree, the 4000 hours of activity experience, the 40 hours of continuing education, completion of the MEPAP course(s), The 200 hours of consulting and completion of the 2 year Activity Professional Manager & Consultant curriculum, with the qualified mentor, would then enable the individual to apply for a level change to ACC Track 3.
Mentors would have the following and send their interest in serving as a mentor to NCCAP attn: Jane Martin-Anderson, ACC
A.Must have been an ACC for a minimum of 2 years. B.Must have current experience as a consultant, and/or activity director for a minimum of 2 years within the last five years. C.Must be a pre-approved instructor of MEPAP and have taught a course within the last two years. D.Mentor must be available to communicate with the applicant at least bi-weekly, by phone and/or internet. E.Mentor must help the applicant complete the program within 2 years and maintain all certifications and qualifications. F.Mentor cannot mentor someone in their employment, state or there own corporation or relative.

ADC Track 5 is available INDEFINITELY...States with less than 90 hour course(s) ie KS, IA, KY, TN, IL, MO read below!!!
2008/05/06
After much discussion, the NCCAP Board of Directors listened to the consumers, and is celebrating more people becoming NCCAP certified , with the indefinite inclusion of ADC Track 5.
Individuals that wish to apply for NCCAP Certification using ADC Track 5, need to complete the ADC Track 5 form, in addition to the NCCAP application, and follow the NCCAP standards accordingly.
*The ADC Track 5 form can be found on the “downloadable forms” page on the NCCAP.org home page.
Some states have a less than 90 hour course as the course "approved by their state" as considering them QUALIFIED to lead activities in their respective states. IF your state is one that the standard is a 45 or a 60 or maybe a 72 hour course, and you completed the course between 1991 - 2001, you may be eligible to apply for the NCCAP ADC Track 5.
APPLY today - or assist someone else with their professional goals!!!!!!
